Addressing the issues faced in the watershed today requires data and knowledge that cannot be collected by any one observing system – there is a need for an exchange of high-quality information between diverse organisations. This demonstrates the need for a unified monitoring approach and a common understanding of data to ensure that monitoring efforts contribute to building a holistic understanding of watershed health.
An environmental charity based in the Elk Valley, the Elk River Alliance has worked to protect the Elk River since 2010. ERA spearheaded the Collaborative in 2021.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for the effective protection, management and conservation of BC’s water, land, air and living resources. It leads work on climate preparedness and adaptation and leads plans to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets.
